Located in the Tarentaise valley, of the Isere river,
in the heart of southeastern french Alps,
this great achievement
for France's electricity needs
was completed in 1952.
The old village of Tignes
was flooded
for the greater good
of France.
Once every ten years,
the lake is drained
for maintenance work
and the remains
of the old village
become visible.
A fresco of 18 000 sq m
representing Hercules
was painted in 1989
on the dam's apron.
It was the work of
Jean–Pierre Pierret,
with the help of eight mountain climbers.
It is considered the largest in the world but has faded away progressively.
