The Nordfjord in western Norway, county of Sogn og Fjordane, covers an area of about 4,295 sq km
and is 106 km long.
It starts as runoff from Europe's largest mainland glacier, Jostedalsbreen, in Stryn municipality which reaches the ocean.
It also contains Europe's deepest lake at 514 m below sea level.
A ski resort opened in 1972 and is the largest summer ski area in northern Europe.
It is based near an arm of Jostedal glacier but
the skiing area is mainly outside the glacier.
The extreme amount of snowfall in winter time makes for an average of snow depth by June 1st of 6 m.
